1972 saw the birth and incorporation of Alaska Records and later its sister labels Harbor and Black Bear Records. Although that was obviously yesterday Alaska Records is still alive and well today with a prospective new deal for the re - release in one form or another of its small but powerful catalogue of talented Artists.
Although almost against all odds Alaska Records was not without success. Joy Sarney, The Flying Saucers and R.B. Zipper had substantiated that but it was Cymande, a very different R&B Afro Jazz black group that was to become the label’s flagship artist coming through with considerable success emanating initially from America. We hit the American R&B and Pop/Rock charts with a top twenty single entitled ‘The Message’ which was followed with equal success by an album. Cymande were honoured to do a tour with Al Green and a second tour with themselves topping the bill.
Personally I am very proud of what we have achieved with Alaska and Cymande since initially this group and what we had recorded all those years ago proved to be way ahead of its time.
